As work begins on the largest US dam removal project, tribes look to a future of growth

Work has begun on the largest dam removal project in U.S. history SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The largest dam removal project in United States history is underway along the California-Oregon border — a process that won't conclude until the end of next year with the help of heavy machinery and explosives. But in some ways, removing the dams is the easy part. The hard part will come over the next decade as workers, partnering with Native American tribes, plant and monitor nearly 17 billion seeds as they try to restore the Klamath River and the surrounding land to what it looked like before the dams started to go up more than a century ago. The demolition is part of a national movement to return the natural flow of the nation's rivers and restore habitat for fish and the ecosystems that sustain other wildlife. More than 2,000 dams have been removed in the U.S. as of February, with the bulk of those having come down within the last 25 years, according to the advocacy group American Rive...

US price and wage increases slow further in the latest signs of cooling inflation

Signs that inflation pressures in the United States are steadily easing emerged Friday in reports that consumer prices rose in June at their slowest pace in more than two years and that wage growth cooled last quarter WASHINGTON -- Signs that inflation pressures in the United States are steadily easing emerged Friday in reports that consumer prices rose in June at their slowest pace in more than two years and that wage growth cooled last quarter. Together, the figures provided the latest signs that the Federal Reserve's drive to tame inflation may succeed without triggering a recession, an outcome known as a “soft landing.” A price gauge closely monitored by the Fed rose just 3% in June from a year earlier. That was down from a 3.8% annual increase in May, though still above the Fed’s 2% inflation target. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.2% from May to June, up slightly from 0.1% the previous month. Last month's sharp slowdown in year-over-year inflation largely reflected fal...

Got Sriracha? The price for a bottle of Huy Fong's iconic hot sauce gets spicy with supplies short

It’s not just you NEW YORK -- It's not just you. Sriracha is hard to come by these days — at least for one popular brand. The shortage of Huy Fong Foods' Sriracha, the beloved red hot sauce packaged in those green-capped bottles, isn't new — with the company pointing to a scarcity of chile pepper supply for several years now. And as frustrated fans continue to face store shelves missing the Huy Fong name, third-party resellers are punching up prices. Huy Fong Sriracha, which used to go for under $5 or $10 a bottle, is now selling for shocking amounts in some listings posted to sites with vast third-party marketplaces — including Amazon, eBay and Walmart. Many are simply sold out. For those still in stock, price s range depending where you look. As of Thursday morning, for example, ads for a single 17-ounce bottle on eBay stretched from around $20 to a whopping $150 — contrasting significantly with the price tags of other hot sauce brands, which don't appear to hav...

Congress leaves for August recess with little movement on appropriations bills

The House and Senate left for August recess with little movement on appropriations bills. The government funding fight continues under the threat of a looming shutdown as both chambers left town for August recess . The House left town Thursday after only passing one of 12 appropriation bills while the Senate has not passed any on the floor. When lawmakers come back to the Capitol in mid-September, they'll have only a few short weeks to fund the government before the Sept. 30 deadline. The House passed the Military Construction Veterans Affairs spending bill on Thursday by a 219-211 vote, with every Democrat and two Republicans voting against it. However, GOP leaders put off a vote on the agriculture spending bill until September because of internal disagreement within the GOP conference. The biggest challenge for Speaker Kevin McCarthy in September is uniting his fractured conference on spending. The House Freedom Caucus and other right-wing members continue to push for deeper spe...

Bluffing or not, Putin’s declared deployment of nuclear weapons to Belarus raises tensions

Sometime this summer, if President Vladimir Putin can be believed, Russia moved some of its short-range nuclear weapons into Belarus, closer to Ukraine and onto the doorstep of NATO’s members in Central and Eastern Europe Sometime this summer, if President Vladimir Putin can be believed, Russia moved some of its short-range nuclear weapons into Belarus, closer to Ukraine and onto NATO's doorstep. The declared deployment of the Russian weapons on the territory of its neighbor and loyal ally marks a new stage in the Kremlin’s nuclear saber-rattling over its invasion of Ukraine and another bid to discourage the West from increasing military support to Kyiv. Neither Putin nor his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, said how many were moved — only that Soviet-era facilities in the country were readied to accommodate them, and that Belarusian pilots and missile crews were trained to use them. The U.S. and NATO haven’t confirmed the move. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg ...

A freighter carrying nearly 3,000 cars catches fire in the North Sea and a crew member is killed

A fire on a freight ship carrying nearly 3,000 cars is burning out of control in the North Sea THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- A fire on a freight ship carrying n early 3,000 cars was burning out of control Wednesday in the North Sea, killing one crew member and injuring others, the Dutch coast guard said. The agency said it was working to save the vessel from sinking close to an important habitat for migratory birds. Boats and helicopters were used to get the 23 crew member s off the ship after they tried unsuccessfully to put out the blaze, the coast guard said in a statement. The cause of the blaze wasn’t immediately known, and it wasn’t clear how the crew member died. The Fremantle Highway was sailing from the German port of Bremerhaven to Singapore when it caught fire about 27 kilometers (17 miles) north of the Dutch island of Ameland. As the blaze continued throughout the day, a salvage company sent an expert to assess the possibility of fastening a cable to the ship that could be...

China removes its outspoken foreign minister during a bumpy time in relations with the US

China has removed the country's sometimes outspoken foreign minister from office and replaced him with his predecessor BEIJING -- China remove d its sometimes outspoken foreign minister on Tuesday and replaced him with his predecessor at an unusually scheduled meeting, a move that has fueled rumors about the personal lives and political rivalries of China's Communist Party elite. The step to remove Qin Gang and replace him with Wang Yi doesn’t appear to signal any significant change in the hard-edged foreign policy adopted in recent years by leader Xi Jinping, who oversees the world's second-largest economy — and a nation that is the primary U.S. rival for international influence. U.S. officials said as much about Qin's departure after learning of the move. In its announcement on the national evening news, state broadcaster CCTV gave no reason for Qin’s removal. Within minutes, all mentions and photos of him had been removed from the Foreign Ministry’s website. Ho...
